Had my surgery on the 13th.  I feel great and going to have my staples removed on Friday.  I was on Opti-fast two weeks before...so I have not had a glass of wine in almost 4 weeks!!  I am not an alcoholic, but I enjoy having a glass of wine every now and then.  Why is it we can't have wine at this stage???  Wine is a liquid...I am on liquid...I am thinking why not??

I hope I didnt come out too harsh.  It just seems like a really bad idea.  I think you could do serious damage to your body if you drank wine now.

I'm thinking the alcohol is way too strong for your healing tummy.

Also,  I'd think long and hard about drinking after surgery anyway.  Couple of reasons.  First, empty calories.  Second, alcoholism is VERY prevalent post WLS.  Might not be worth the risk.  Not saying I haven't had a drink since surgery, but I waited over 2 months, and even then, had like two sips.  Did NOT even attempt the whole thing.

Good luck!

Also remember that since your stomach is so small and you aren't eating much - you will feel the results of the alochol a lot quickier.  I am 4 months out and I had a sip or two but do think I will wait awhile longer.  You are way too new to try it now.  You stomach has to heal.

Good luck, Linda

Hey you are to early out to try alcohol. I would wait until at least the July 4th celebration before trying.

I had my first glass of wine when I was 3 weeks out, a group of us went to a wine and seafood festival that had been prebooked months earlier and I remember that I was very cautious and took tiny sips.   I recall that while it was ok, it made me very light headed and I didn't fini****   It also didn't taste as I had expected and it took a little longer for me to try again.   I love a glass of wine occasionally now.   The biggest issue that most people (including my own surgeon) have is that wine (and all alcohol) has empty calories and little nutritional value.   Marion

You will likely find that it burns, so hold off a little while longer.  I have some wine and it doesn't bother me, however, be very careful when you do have some...  it will hit you hard!  Many folks on this board have commented that they were BUZZED very easily!

I see my doctor on Friday and I am going to ask him.  I don't want the extra calories and I have followed everything exactly to "the tee" as instructed, but I do enjoy every now and then.  I figured one glass might be too much, since a while since had one, lost some weight etc.  I wondered what the liver goes through after this kid of surgery.  Doctor wanted it shrunk before surgery...so no carbs, etc. ...wasn't sure how that would affect the liver.  Ok - just letting everyone know that "wine " is on my mind.  I will wait!!

I asked my doc about this and he said it was ok as long as I didn't over indulge and to take it slow to see how my body reacted because you do not want to throw up.   And also because yes, losing weight very quickly does tax your liver.    I got the feeling he doesn't tell all patients this (but I may be wrong) and probably because wine is a bunch of empty calories which may slow your weight loss down (I’ll send you PM with an article as to why).  He also had a patient who didn't eat at all she only drank red wine all day and she became very ill form lack of nutrition.

So, I did have wine 2 weeks post op over Thanksgiving and do enjoy it socially on the weekends. I was/am fine and I don't get anymore tipsy than I did prior to surgery, although this isn't the case with everyone, but I think more so with RnY.  That being said, my weight loss has been slower than I'd like even though I work out rigorously A LOT and my net calories are usually very low.  Is it because of the wine, not sure?  I am not gonna give up wine, I really enjoy it and don't want to.  I don’t abuse alcohol and I want to just live my life.  However, I'm experimenting by going without for a few weeks to see if it makes a big difference as far as my weight loss.  As you’ve heard from other members, most don’t drink, at least for the first 5-6 months, and if you want to maximize your weight loss during that honeymoon period, it is a good idea to abstain.  But, if you want to try it, just clear it with your doctor first.
